Alzheimer’s Society is the only UK charity that campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure for dementia and supports those who are living with it.
Donations go towards funding research into dementia, with the aim of improving care, finding the cause and working towards its prevention. The charity also runs many campaigns, with the goal of keeping dementia at the top of the political agenda and striving for positive changes.
Alzheimer’s Society also provides local support services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These services include dementia cafés, ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions, dementia advisers, support workers and side-by-side volunteers who help those people suffering from the condition, as well as their families, friends and carers.
The charity believes that too many people face dementia alone, and many people find it difficult to figure out who to turn if they’re looking for information and support. The solution is to provide a wide range of support services to ensure that nobody has to face it alone.
One of the charity’s most significant goals is that by 2022, all people who are newly diagnosed with dementia will have an offer of support and all those who have the condition will be able to manage it and live better overall.
There has not been a new drug for dementia introduced in the past 15 years. The drugs that exist cannot slow dementia down or stop it from getting worse, and there is currently no definite way to prevent dementia or cure it. Alzheimer’s Society is conducting research to study diseases of the brain with the goal of beating Alzheimer’s and finding a cure.
With continued support and charitable donations, Alzheimer’s Society hopes to roll out services such as ‘Dementia Connect’, which will hopefully transform the support that people living with dementia receive. This service combines face-to-face support with telephone and online advice, all provided by specially trained dementia advisers.
If you select Alzheimer’s Society Wales as your chosen charity, then Collect my Clothes will donate £250 for each ton of items collected. These funds can go towards supporting the activities of the society and helping to help those people who are suffering with Alzheimers.
